Broncos update

Apologies for the inconsistent updates while the Broncos have been on the road.

But here are how things are, as they stand now:

The Broncos finally got a road win, after 10 consecutive losses, on Tuesday, by way of a thrilling 6-4 win against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings.

That leaves them at 5-14 overall with one game remaining in their four-game set against RGV. They come home on Thursday for a four-game homestand against San Angelo.

Contributing to Tuesday's win were Argelis Nunez (RBI double, RBI single), Mario Mendez (RBI single) and Rafael Ozuna (RBI single).

Nunez and Andres Santos scored off errors.

The Broncos trailed 4-3 before rallying with a three-run eighth inning.

Travis Parker earned the win in relief after a so-so outing from Broncos starter Gustavo Vasquez.

Vasquez went seven innings and gave up four runs on nine hits. He struck out seven and walked two.

Tristan Crawford earned the save for Laredo, which had six runs on 11 hits and committed one error.

RGV scored four on nine and also had one error.

The win capped a nice day for the Broncos, who earlier in the afternoon announced the acquisition of catcher Luany Sanchez.

Sanchez hit .319 with 71 RBIs and 18 homers in 77 games for the Broncos last season. He's experienced, a solid leader and obviously a great offensive threat, and he helps shore up a huge weakness at the catching spot.

He is expected to be in the lineup on Thursday.

Broncos win

Broncos win, 5-3.

Harris is the winning pitcher. Julio Pinto gets the save.

Broncos are now 4-12 on the season.

Broncos on top

The Broncos are on top heading into the 9th inning.

They scored four runs on four hits in the seventh, ignited by Mario Mendez's two-run triple and RBI doubles from Andres "El Monkey" Santos and Rafael Ozuna.

5-3 Broncos into the 9th, three outs away from their fourth win of the season.

Same score, same story

Same score into the 6th as the Broncos again can't capitalize after putting two on with one out. By the way, this should come as no shocker, but Laredo was hitting .210 with runners in scoring position entering tonight's game.

Broncos get on the board

The Broncos cut their deficit by one run in the 4th when Miguel Ortiz scored on an error by Dillas second baseman Carlos Figueroa with one out.

3-1 Dillas into the 5th

Dillas strike early and often in 3rd

The Dillas lead 3-0 into the 4th after scoring three runs off two hits in the 3rd, two of which were unearned.

Justin Wenger scored off an error, Keanon Simon scored by beating a throw to home and Trent Lockwood's RBI double capped things off.

Again, the Broncos put two on with one out in the 3rd but failed to capitalize. No shock there.

Into the 3rd

The Broncos had another leadoff hit in the 2nd but baserunning error led to a double play that put the stops on any potential scoring.

0-0 into the 3rd. Harris has looked very sharp early, though.

More missed opportunities

The Broncos put two on with none out in the 1st, but, surprise, surprise, come away with nothing.

0-0 into the 2nd. Harris did very well in his half in the inning.

Broncos vs. Dillas, Game 4

The Broncos have lost eight of their last 10 games entering tonight's series finale against Amarillo.

Laredo enters at 3-12. Amarillo is 10-5 and still in a tie for first place with San Angelo.

The Broncos are seven games out of first place, four games out of the final playoff spot.

Laredo will have Ryan Harris (0-3, 6.41 ERA) on the mound. The Dillas will have Taylor Allen (0-2, 8.16 ERA) on the mound.

Not exactly looking like your matchup of elite pitchers, but we'll see what happens.

Not looking good

Is it time for the Broncos management to start getting irritated?

The Gateway Gang is 3-12 heading into tonight's series finale against Amarillo at Veterans Field.

It boasts a 6.19 team ERA and has compiled 35 errors in 15 games.

There are problems everywhere. The offense is far from clutch, never coming through when the team needs it most. You'll get a solo shot here or a RBI double trailing 6-1 in the ninth, but that you hit they desperately need with two on and one out? Nowhere to be found.

The defense has been horrible. Hustle has been lazy. Team sources have said some of that can be attributed to Luis Ugueto, who arrived late and showed up out of shape, and Rafael Ozuna, who refuses to pursue hard and run hard.

The pitching has been so-so, particularly the starting pitching. Tano Tijerina has been solid. Gregorio Martinez has been excellent. Ryan Harris has underachieved.

The bullpen has been costly.

Yes, this Broncos team should be better than 3-12. The talent on this team says that the club should be battling for first place.

But where have we heard that before? For the last two years, it's been the same thing with the Broncos: an underachieving club that boasts more style than substance.

The only glaring positive is that this team really, really likes each other and enjoys each other's company.

That's nice, and it says a lot about the character assembled.

But if the Broncos are hoping this season is the one that puts them in concrete favor of leasing the new ballpark to be built in the near future, they have to turn things around quickly.

Attendance has been up considerably this year, and that isn't the greatest thing for the team. All that means is more people are seeing an underachieving product that has lost 12 of 15 games.

Broncos lose

Broncos fall 6-3.

Lockwood homers

Trent Lockwood drills a two-out solo homer in the 8th for a 4-1 Dillas lead.

Broncos cut into deficit

Broncos get on the board in the 7th on Jaime Morales' groundout RBI with one out.

Dillas starter Ralph Roberts is out of the game.

He's in line for the win, having thrown 6 four innings and allowing four hits. He struck out eight and walked one.

Into the 7th

3-0 Dillas into the 7th.

Amarillo has three runs on five hits. Laredo has no runs on four hits.

Into the 6th, 3-0 Dillas

Broncos threaten again in the 5th by putting two on with two out.

The Dillas, meanwhile, added another run, of yet another Broncos error. David Cardona dropped a fly ball in left field.

2-0 Dillas

Still 2-0 Dillas into the 5th.

The Broncos finally got their first hit of the game in the inning - an OJ Garza single - and threatened by putting two on with one out, alas nothing came of it.

Dillas lead 2-0

Dillas lead 2-0 into the 4th as they scored two runs on three hits.

Keanon Simon's RBI single with none out started things before Willie James scored off an error moments later.

The Broncos went down in order in their half of the inning and have yet to record a hit.

Into the 3rd

Still 0-0 into the 3rd.

Pretty good pitcher's duel so far.

Scoreless into the 2nd

Broncos go down in order in the 1st, but the Dillas don't do much better.

No hits in the inning, 0-0 into the 2nd.

Broncos vs, Dillas

I'm here at Veterans Field as the Broncos (3-11) host the Amarillo Dillas (9-5) in Game 3 of the four-game series.

Tano Tijerina is on the mound tonight for Laredo, which will be without Argelis Nunez, who was suspended seven games today for allegedly spitting in the face of an umpire prior to his ejection last night.

Nunez had been a key offensive star for the Broncos, hitting .280 with nine RBIs and a homer.

The Dillas will have Ralph Roberts (0-0, 1.86 ERA) on the mound tonight.

Also new to the Broncos lineup, arriving at the start of this series, is shortstop Jaime Morales, who is said to have a great defensive glove.

He has, at least for the time being, replaced Ryan Flynn at shortstop.

Broncos get back on track in a big way

Well, the one home game I had to miss (due to covering a press conference) is the Broncos' biggest win of the season.

The Gateway Gang clubbed 20 hits en route to a 14-4 win over Amarillo, which entered the game tied for first place, on Wednesday night.

The highlight was Argelis Nunez's grand slam in the third inning.

Gustavo Vasquez earned the win for Laredo. He pitched six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.

He walked two and struck out three.

Amarillo scored four runs on 10 hits and fell to 8-5 on the season.

Laredo improved to 3-10.

For a detailed account of the game, you can ready Ray Brito's account here.

More moves

The Broncos officially signed former Bronco Luis Arroyo today.

Arroyo, in 2007, went 8-4 with a 3.55 ERA for Laredo.

He provides a solid ace trio with Gregorio Martinez and Ryan Harris at the top of the Broncos' rotation.

Arroyo will be the No. 3 starter. Harris is No. 1 and Martinez is No.2.

The Broncos also signed former LCC pitcher Travis Parker.

Dave Wasylak was released.

Also, former Broncos pitcher Maximo de la Cruz, who was released earlier this weekend, signed with the Harlingen WhiteWings today.

Broncos lose 5th straight

ROBSTOWN — The Laredo Broncos battled, but an error in the bottom of the ninth led to the Costal Bend Thunder sweeping the Broncos by a score of 3-2 at Fairgrounds Field.

The Broncos had runners on first and third with no one out in the first inning, but Mario Mendez, Argelis Nuñez, and Andres Santos were not able to bring the runner in from third.

However, the Thunder would strike in their half of the first. Dustin Smith led off with a single and then stole both second and third. Then with 1 out Leivi Ventura hit a sacrifice fly giving them the 1-0 lead.

Costal Bend would strike again in the bottom of the second. With 2 outs and runners on the corner, Kevin Butler hit a rbi single scoring Casey Gordon, and making the score 2-0.

The Broncos would crack the scoreboard in the 4th inning. With 1 out, Andres “El Monkey” Santos came up and hit a solo home run, his second of the season.

The next batter, David Cardona, also hit a solo home run, his second of the season. The back-to-back home runs tied the game at 2.

Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez was sailing along in his outing but ran into trouble in the eighth.

Michael Lewis led off with a walk and then stole second. After a groundout moved him to third, the Broncos intentionally walked Manny Mejia. Laredo would then take out Martinez to bring in the lefty Edgar Soto to face the lefty Juvy Ibarra.

Soto would strike out Ibarra for the second out. Julio Pinto would then come in to face the right handed hitting Amadeo Zazueta. Pinto would get him to fly out to end the threat and keep the score tied at 2.

Martinez would get a no decision going 7 1/3 innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits. He also walked two batters and stuck out two. Julio Pinto would stay in the game to pitch the 9th inning and gave up a lead off double to Casey Gordon.

After he intentionally walked Bryan Vickers, the Broncos brought in Tristan Crawford. Crawford would then intentionally walk Kevin Butler to load the bases.

Dustin Smith then hit a slow roller to Rafael Ozuna at short who couldn’t handle it, allowing the winning run to score.

The Broncos scored two runs on eight hits and had three errors while the Thunder scored three runs on eight hits and had one error.

The Broncos are now 2-10 on the season, while the Thunder are 7-5.

The Broncos have today off and will play next on Wednesday at Veterans Field as they open up a 4-game series against the Amarillo Dillas at 7:30 p.m.

Broncos fall against Thunder

Robstown - The Laredo Broncos lost their fourth consecutive game on Sunday night, falling 7-1 to the Coastal Bend Thunder at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown.

The Broncos fell to 2-9 on the season as the Thunder improved to 6-5.

The final game of the four-game series is tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Coastal Bend jumped out on top in the first inning as it claimed a 2-0 lead courtesy of Amadeo Zazueta's two-run double.

The lead would bloom for good in the second inning, as Manny Mejia drilled his second homer of the season in grand slam fashion with two outs, putting the Thunder ahead 6-0.

The Broncos' lone run came in the third inning as they loaded the bases with one out.

With O.J. Garza forced out at second base, Kylee Hash would take advantage and score on the play.

It would be the last time the Broncos would cross home plate all night.

They threatened in the fifth inning when they had the bases loaded with two outs, but nothing came about as Andres "El Monkey" Santos flied out to end the threat.

Laredo would threaten one last time, this time in the seventh inning, when they put two runners on with one out.

Unfortunately, Mario Mendez followed with a strikeout and Argelis Nunez grounded out to end the inning, leading to the ejection of Luis Ugueto, who has been called out earlier in the inning on an attempted bunt hit when it had appeared that the Thunder first baseman came off the bag.

Broncos ace Ryan Harris, after the rough start, ended up getting tagged with the loss.

He pitched seven innings and gave up six runs - four earned - on seven hits.

He struck out three and walked one.

The Broncos scored one run on five hits and had four errors, while the Thunder scored seven runs on nine hits and accounted for just one error.

Broncos lose 3rd straight game, fall 12-2

The Broncos lost their third consecutive game on Saturday night, falling 12-2 to the Coastal Bend Thunder in Robstown.

Laredo is now 2-8 on the season as Coastal Bend improved to 5-5. Game 3 of the four-game series is tonight at Fairgrounds Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Broncos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Andres “El Monkey” Santos’ RBI single in the first inning, but it all fell apart from there as the Thunder scored four runs in their half of the inning to pull ahead for good, 4-1.

Laredo’s lone other run came on Mario Mendez’s third homer of the season, a solo blast in the third inning.

Broncos starter Dave Wasylak was pulled in the third as the Thunder’s lead grew to 5-2.

Wasylak lasted 3 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs on six hits.

He walked six and struck out two.

But relievers Edgar Soto and Nathan Crawford would go through a hellacious fifth inning that left little chance for a late Laredo rally.

The duo gave up four runs on only two hits, but compiled three walks and two wild pitches.

The Thunder extended their lead once more in the seventh inning on RBI singles by Amadeo Zazueta and Juvy Ibarra.

The Broncos scored two runs on nine hits and had two errors, while the Thunder scored 12 runs on 16 hits and had one error.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Broncos released starting pitcher Maximo de la Cruz.

De la Cruz went 0-1 with a 11.42 ERA for the Broncos, surrendering 11 earned runs on 14 hits in 8.2 innings pitched.

He walked six and struck out eight.

Broncos lose

Broncos fall to Coastal Bend tonight, 7-6.

They trailed 6-3 early but made it close ... again. Andres "El Monkey" Santos drilled a solo shot for the Broncos in the sixth.

The Broncos are now 2-7 on the season. The Thunder improved to 4-5.

Broncos head to Robstown

The Broncos made a couple of moves today, placing Maximo de la Cruz on the inactive list and releasing Steven Wright.

They're in Robstown for the start of a four-game series against the Coastal Bend Thunder tonight.

The Broncos are 2-6 entering the series. The Thunder is 3-5.

Even through the rough start, Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez said in an email that the roster should stay as is for awhile.

"Technically this team is 2-2 so we have to give it some time to gel together, which it will," Melendez said.

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Broncos fall

Broncos fall 8-7 in a heartbreaker.

They scored six runs in the final two innings and still managed to fall short.

Broncos score 5 in 8th

8-6 Colts heading into the 9th as the Broncos score five runs on five hits in the 8th, highlighted by Robert Moron's two-run homer.

All five runs came with two outs.

Landreth boosts Colts' lead

The Colts add a bit more cushion to their lead on Jason Landreth's RBI single with two outs in the 7th.

San Angelo leads 8-1 into the 8th.

Into the 7th

Colts are now up 7-1 after Shan Sullivan's two-out groundout RBI in the 6th.

Nathan Crawford is now out of the game as the Broncos are now on to their third pitcher through six innings.

Crawford pitched two innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He walked four and struck out two.

The Broncos finally got on the board on Argelis Nunez's RBI single with none out in the 6th.

They got three hits in the inning as they finally got to Barnard but didn't come away with anything more.

Correction

The score is 6-0 Colts heading into the 6th.

Same score into the 6th

Neither team got anything going in the 5th. Still 5-0 Colts heading into the 6th.

Colts starter Chandlar Barnard has been doing a stellar job of keeping the Broncos off balanced and off the basepath.

Colts lead 5-0 into the 5th

The Colts lead 5-0 heading into the 5th.

Maximo de la Cruz was removed from the game after allowing his fourth homer of the contest, this time a two-run shot from Hunter Jobes.

De La Cruz's line: 3 1/3 innings, five earned runs on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Reliever Nathan Crawford promptly came in just in time to surrender a RBI single from Nick Mahin, who's having a heck of a game himself.

The Broncos' offense has done little. It has managed just four scattered hits as Laredo has yet to seriously threaten all night.

Bombs push Colts to 3-0 lead

Maximo de la Cruz would be having quite a game if it wasn't for those darn home runs.

Cruz surrendered a lead-off solo blast to Bryan Frichter - Frichter's second of the game as he obviously has had no problems figuring out de la Cruz - to lead off the 3rd.

Then, moments later, with two outs, Nick Mahin drilled another solo blast, this one also to left field, to push the Colts ahead to 3-0 heading into the 4th.

Ryan Flynn got the Broncos' second hit of the game when he hit a blooper into shallow right field in the 3rd.

Into the 3rd

Same score heading into the 3rd inning, 1-0 Colts.

Both pitchers are throwing strong games so far. Maximo de la Cruz has allowed three hits and struck out 3. Chandlar Barnard has faced the minimum.

Frichter puts Colts ahead early

After 1, the Colts are on top 1-0 after Bryan Frichter's two-out solo homer to left field.

San Angelo got two hits in that inning, Laredo got one - a Mario Mendez single with two outs.

Broncos vs, Colts, Game 4

We have internet working tonight at Veterans so I should be able to live blog. Obviously, you'll be able to tell whether or not that is the case as the night goes along.

Anyway, it's the final game of the four-game homestand for the Broncos against the Colts tonight. The Broncos currently lead the series, 2-1.

Overall, Laredo is 2-5. San Angelo is 4-3.

Maximo de la Cruz is slated to go tonight for the Broncos. He is 0-0 on the season with a 10.13 ERA, having surrendered six earned runs in 5.1 innings in his initial start last week.

Chandlar Barnard will take the ball for the Colts.

He is 1-0 on the season with a 9.00 ERA, having surrendered five earned runs in five innings.

Broncos win

Unfortunately, due to a disconnected wireless system at Veterans, I was unable to live blog from the game.

A shame, since the Broncos pulled off a 8-4 win before a crowd of 559. Gregorio Martinez (1-1) was the winning pitcher. He threw six innings, allowing 4 runs - 1 earned - on 7 hits.

Drew Coffey (0-1) was the losing pitcher for the Colts.

The Broncos got eight runs on 10 hits and committed 2 errors. The Colts managed four runs on 10 hits with one error.

Here's the game story that will run in tomorrow's LMT.

==========================

By DENNIS SILVA II
LAREDO MORNING TIMES

The Broncos made two drastic moves to their lineup on Wednesday.

The result was a win, just their second of the season, and a snapped losing skid of five defeats in six games.

The team welcomed star shortstop and former Seattle Mariner Luis Ugueto and also announced the signing of slugger Rafael Ozuna.

Both played key roles as the Broncos nipped the San Angelo Colts, 8-4, before a crowd of 559 at Veterans Field.

“It was a big improvement from the way we had been playing,” Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez said. “We’re still shaky defensively but I truly feel we’ll put things together soon.”

The win boosted Laredo’s record to 2-5 as San Angelo fell to 4-3.

Ugueto, who contributed to Venezuela’s 2009 Caribbean World Series championship team, was the leadoff hitter in Wednesday’s lineup.

He went 1-for-2 with three walks and also showed nice speed along the basepath.

Ozuna, who played with United League Baseball’s Alexandria Aces last season and hit .326 with 42 RBIs and 10 home runs, hit sixth in the lineup and played second base on Wednesday.
He quickly showed why he was brought on board.

With the Broncos trailing 3-2, Ozuna and Jake Wells each drilled two-run doubles in the third inning to push the Gateway Gang ahead for good.

“With them (Ugueto and Ozuna) on hand, we’re a much improved team and we’ll be so much better defensively,” Melendez said. “You can tell just from them playing their first game how much of an impact they’ll have, especially once they get acclimated.”

Mario Mendez hit the second of his two sacrifice RBIs in the fourth inning to extend the Broncos’ advantage to 7-4 before the team added another run for good measure.

The Broncos got on the board quickly by scoring two runs in the first inning.

Mendez’s first sacrifice RBI to center scored Ugueto before O.J. Garza stole home moments later.

The Colts countered with three runs in the third to take the lead, though all were unearned for Broncos right-hander Gregorio Martinez, who threw a fine game after surrendering five earned runs in 6.1 innings in his initial start last week.

Continuing along with the back-and-forth pace, the Broncos scored four runs in their frame of the third, setting the stage for Mendez’s second sacrifice RBI.

Colts left-handed starter Drew Coffey (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

He threw four innings and surrendered seven runs – three earned – on seven hits.
He struck out one and walked three.

Martinez rebounded nicely from his previous outing.

He improved to 1-1 on the season and allowed four runs – one earned – on nine hits in six innings of work.

He struck out four and walked three.

The two clubs conclude their four-game series, which the Broncos currently lead 2-1, tonight at Veterans Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Broncos vs. Colts, Game 3

I'm back at Veterans as the Broncos look to snap a skid that has seen them lose five of their first six games to start the season.

There have been some moves, however, as the team has Luis Ugueto back in the fold. The former Seattle Mariner and star shortstop is leading off in the lineup and will DH.

Also new to the lineup is Rafael Ozuna, who played with Alexandria of the ULB last season. He hit .326 with 42 RBIs and 10 homers with the Aces, and posted a career-best on-base percentage of .410.

The 34-year-old is batting sixth in the lineup and will play second base.

To make room for the duo, the Broncos inactivated three pitchers - Ryan Harris, Tano Tijerina and Gustavo Vasquez.

Also, catcher Jake Wells is in the lineup in place of Kylee Hash.

Gregorio Martinez is on the mound for the Broncos tonight. For the Colts, it is Drew Coffey.

Martinez is 0-1 with a 7.11 ERA so far this season, having surrendered five earned runs in 6.1 innings,

Coffey is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA, having surrendered two earned runs in four innings.

Broncos fall

Broncos fall, 7-2. It's their fifth loss in six games.

Colts lead 7-2

Heading into the 9th, the Broncos will need quite a comeback to overcome their five-run (7-2) deficit.

The announced attendance here at Veterans is 682.

Colts expand lead

Brian Nichols' two-run single in the 7th expands the Colts' lead to 5-2 entering the 8th.

Ryan Harris was pulled in the 7th. His line is: 6.1 innings pitched, five runs on eight hits and five walks and four strikeouts.

Carlos Alvarez is in for relief for the Broncos.

Meanwhile, Bryan Henschel is still rollin' along for the Colts.

Into the 7th

Neither team got a hit in the 6th as the score remains 3-2 in favor of the Colts.

Both starting pitchers are still in the game.

Not for long...

The Broncos lead didn't last long as the Colts put up 3 runs on 3 hits in the 5th.

San Angelo leads 3-2 into the 6th.

Broncos get on the board

After a scoreless 3 innings, the Broncos put two runs on the board in the fourth.

With one out, Robert Moron drilled a RBI single before Kylee Hash followed with a groundout RBI.

In the inning, the Broncos tallied 3 hits.

On defense, the Broncos compiled their second double play of the game, and 6th in the last 13 innings.

Their defense, atleast from what I've seen in two games against a quality ballclub, has been spectacular.

2-0 Broncos into the 5th.

Harris in a groove

Ryan Harris seems to be in a good groove after allowing two on with none out to start the first.

He has surrendered just one hit in the last two innings as there is still no score after 3.

He's allowed three hits overall and has struck out three and walked one.

Broncos turn another DP

After 2, score is still 0-0.

The Broncos have turned another double play tonight. They've turned 5 in the last 11 innings so far.

0-0 after 1

After 1, 0-0.

The Colts have 1 hit and left 2 on base. The Broncos have the sme line.

Considerably smaller crowd than last night.

Correction

Harris is not 0-1, he's 0-0. He earned a no-decision in the team's season opener, surrendering five earned runs and walking seven in five innings.

Broncos vs. Colts, Game 2

No new news on the day from the Broncos side, other than Broncos GM Jose Melendez did confirm that Luis Ugueto will be in the lineup tomorrow.

Ugueto will presumably take Ryan Flynn's spot in the lineup, though Flynn has been excellent on defense and solid with the bat.

Righty Bryan Henschel is on the mound for the Colts. Ryan Harris will take the ball for the Broncos.

Harris, the Broncos' ace, is 0-1 on the season. Henschel is 1-0.

Broncos look for 2nd win

If you haven't read the game story from last night's Colts-Broncos Game 1 thriller, here it is.

Ryan Harris, the Broncos' ace, is slated to start tonight's Game 2. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Broncos win 6-5 in dramatic fashion. More to come.

Almost there

Same score into the 9th, 5-3 Broncos.

Tristan Crawford is on the mound to try and close the deal for the Broncos.

Same score into the 8th

Broncos still lead 5-3 into the 8th.

Julio Pinto was impressive in his Broncos debut, mowing down the Colts in order in the 7th.

Here's a short roundup so far:

The Colts have scored three runs on 11 hits to the Broncos' five runs on 7 hits.

San Angelo has stranded 11 runners and has committed two errors.

2,846 in attendance

The announced attendance here at Veterans Field is 2,846.

Broncos lead 5-3 into the 7th

Each team adds a run in the 6th. The Broncos score on Robert Moron's groundout RBI.

Tijerina is out, having thrown six innings and allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out 3 and walking 4.

Julio Pinto is in for relief.

Into the 6th, Broncos lead 4-2

The Broncos have chased Ezequiel Astacio from the game.

Astacio pitched 4 innings and surrendered 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 4. He walked none.

Jacob Ramos is in for relief.

The Broncos expanded their lead to 4-2 when Cardona took advantage of two errors (by the second baseman and center fielder) after stealing second to score with no outs in the 5th.

Tijerina allowed just a single in the 5th and nothing more. He's settled down considerably and seems to be rolling smoothly right now.

4-2 Broncos into the 6th.

Mendez puts Broncos on top

The Broncos are ahead going into the 5th, thanks to Mario Mendez's one-out solo blast to left field.

The Broncos could have done a bit more damage, but left 2 on.

Tijerina also had his first strong inning of the game, mowing the Colts down in order in the 4th.

You can't say the Colts haven't had their chances though. They stranded nine baserunners in the first 3 innings.

Cardona ties it up 2-2 into the 4th

The Broncos got on the board in the 3rd, courtesy of David Cardona's two-run blast to left field with one out that evened the score.

The Broncos now have 3 hits in the game.

Meanwhile, Tijerina continues to get bailed out by great defense. For the third consecutive inning, he went through a bases-loaded jam and for the third consecutive inning, a double play ended things with him unharmed.

He has surrendered eight hits (including a solo homer to Jason Landreth) and three walks. Yet, in spite of that, he's only given up two runs, which is more indicative of an active and athletic defense more so than his control and poise during those jams.

Into the 3rd

Tijerina again eludes heavy damage in a bases-loaded jam, this time with one out in the 2nd inning.

He was saved by a brilliant throw on the tail end of a double play by former United High great O.J. Garza.

Playing mid-center, Garza collected a fly-out before throwing a fiery laser to catcher Kylee Hash to nail Shan Sullivan trying to score to end the inning,

The Colts have stranded six runners in the first two innings. In 2 innings, Tijerina has allowed four hits and has walked three.

The Broncos, again, went out meekly but at least tallied their first hit of the inning, courtesy of a Miguel Ortiz single.

1-0 Colts into the 3rd.

1-0 Colts after 1

The Colts lead 1-0 after 1 inning.

Tijerina loaded the bases with no outs before surrendering a walk to Jason Landreth. He did escape the inning otherwise unharmed, however.

The Broncos went down weakly in their half of the frame.

Former Astro Ezequiel Astacio is starting for the Colts. Astacio pitched for the Astros in the 2005 World Series against the Chicago White Sox.

Broncos vs. Colts

I'm live here at Veterans Field, where the Broncos are to host the San Angelo Colts in 30 minutes.

Tano Tijerina, former Nixon great and Latin Sports Hall of Famer, is slated to start for the Broncos.

Laredo enters the game 0-4. San Angelo is 3-1.

Selwyn Langaigne and Luis Ugueto, figured to be two significant players for the Broncos, are still not here. Ugueto is expected Wednesday and is slated to be in the lineup then.

Langaigne's situation is cloudy and the team still has no clue when he'll arrive. All General Manager Jose Melendez said is that more will be known Wednesday.

As for the team's winless start, Melendez had this to say:

"We didn’t expect that start, especially considering the type of team we put together. The bullpen is our only concern. The defense is shaky, but when you keep throwing ball after ball after ball, that doesn’t help."

The Broncos addressed some of their bullpen issues by adding Edgar Soto and Carlos Alvarez to the roster. The two had missed the last few weeks due to visa issues.

They also added reliever Julio Pinto.

To make room, the Broncos released Ricky Ledesma, David Triplett and Trevor Reves.

Edinburg sweeps Laredo

The Broncos are 0-4 heading into tonight's home opener against San Angelo at Veterans Field.

Edinburg won 14-8 last night to close the season-opening series. It was a brutal start for the Broncos, who will have former Nixon great and Latin Sports Hall of Famer Tano Tijerina on the mound for tonight's contest.

The Roadrunners won by scores of, in order, 10-6, 10-2, 8-7 and 14-8.

Yes, that's poor defense and so-so offense. Defense was a concern of Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez's entering the series and that certainly will continue to be the case.

The good news is that the Broncos were far from full strength against Edinburg.

They were missing core players Selwyn Langaigne and Luis Ugueto, and relievers Carlos Alvarez and Edgar Soto.

All four had missed the last few weeks due to visa issues but are expected to be in the lineup tonight.

For Melendez and his team, they could not be arriving at a better time.

Broncos drop to 0-2

It hasn't been the best of starts for the Broncos.

The Gateway Gang fell to 0-2 on the season after falling to Edinburg, 10-2, in Game 2 of its four-game series.

The Broncos scored two runs on six hits, with two errors, while the Roadrunners scored 10
runs on seven hits with one error.

Righty Gregorio Martinez was tagged with the loss after pitching 6.1 innings. He gave up seven runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits. He walked four and struck out three.

The Broncos' runs came early, when Ryan Flynn scored on an error and Andres "El Monkey" Santos tallied an RBI groundout to score Stephen Wright.

For more on the game, here's Ray Brito's account from Edinburg.

Righty Maximo de la Cruz is slated to pitch for the Broncos tomorrow. The final game of the series is Sunday.

Broncos open with loss

The Broncos opened their 2009 season with a loss last night in Edinburg, falling 10-6.

The primary reason behind the Broncos starting 0-1 was that they issued 10 walks and hit 3 batters.

The Broncos scored six runs on 12 hits with one error, while the Roadrunners scored 10 runs on nine hits and one error.

The Broncos jumped out to a 4-0 lead, spurred by Mario Mendez's solo homer. But it was all downhill from there.

You can ready Ray Brito's account of the game here.

Broncos sweep exhibition games

The Broncos finished their exhibition season 2-0 after defeating the Laredo Adult Baseball League 7-3 on Saturday night at Veterans.

They defeated the Laredo Wood Bat League Prospects 9-3 the night before.

Here's the write-up from Friday's game:

=========================
The 2009 Broncos got their first taste of game action on Friday when they hosted the Laredo Wood Bat League Prospects en route to a 9-3 exhibition win at Veterans Field.

For Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez and Manager Ricardo Cuevas, it was an opportunity to see some of the talent as cuts were slated to be made late Friday night and following tonight's second exhibition against the Laredo Adult Baseball League.

"We know we can hit well and we have good depth," Melendez said.

"What we're concerned with is defense. We have a logjam in the outfield."

With that in mind, Cuevas spent a lot of Friday's action tinkering with lineup experiments, such as moving outfielders to play infield and vice versa.

The Prospects were made up mostly of high school stars, current and past, including Luis Pollorena (United High), Ramon Sandoval (United, now at TAMIU), Jorge Guarneros (United, now at TAMIU), Danny Navarro (United, now at TAMIU) and Jason Bonugli (United, now at TAMIU).

They found themselves going up against right-hander Ryan Harris, United League Baseball's Pitcher of the Year in 2006, and two other times as well.

"Baseball is baseball," Pollorena said prior to Friday's game.

"As long as we get to play, we're happy.

We're just trying to put the ball in play and put together a good game."

In what was a relatively entertaining game that featured plenty of offense for the boys of summer, Broncos fans got a good look at some of the talent the team will be featuring this year.

Those standouts include Cleveland Brownlee, who has impressed with his power bat, and rookie shortstop Ryan Flynn, a former TAMIU star whose defense has been nothing short of exceptional.

He showed superb range, a quick release and a strong arm as the Prospects seemed to test him time and time again on Friday, and he made them pay each and every time.

"It's a common occurrence now, he's just been excellent defensively every day," Melendez said of Flynn.

"He made some great, great plays.

He's struggling with the bat, which we expected, but he's been great."

The Broncos also awarded fans a look at locals Andres Santos and O.J. Garza, former United stars, as well as former Nixon High great and Latin-American Sports Hall of Famer Tano Tijerina.

The team put the game away in the second inning, when it tallied seven runs on seven hits and hit for the cycle, including a homer over the left field wall by Santos with one out.

Miguel Ortiz (three-run double) and Mario Mendez (two-run triple) also aided the cause.

Santos added a sacrifice RBI in the fourth and Angelis Nunez threw in a RBI triple for good measure in the eighth.

Tijerina threw two innings in relief and did not allow a runner to sniff base.

He forced four groundouts and two flyouts.

"He pitched very well," Melendez said.

"He looked sharp and he executed nicely. He looks great out there."

As a whole, the Broncos were sound defensively and patient at the plate offensively.

"We still have a lot of hard decisions to make," Melendez said.

"There are still a lot of holes we need to address.

The defense was okay, the hitting lacked toward the end a bit and the pitching looked good.

"But we still have concerns with our catching situation.

We have five guys in camp and none of them has taken advantage of the role."

Plenty of players got a look, including six pitchers - Harris, Tijerina, Gustavo Vasquez, Nathan Crawford and Dave Triplett.

Harris and Tijerina are projected starters.

For the Prospects, who managed just one hit through the first six innings, Pollorena went 0-for-1 with two walks and Jose Luis Maldonado put the team on the board in the ninth with a three-run moon shot over left field with one out.

The Broncos' lineup on Friday looked like this, in order: Ortiz (second base), Garza (center field), Mendez (third base), Nunez (right field), Santos (first base), Brownlee (designated hitter), David Cardona (left field), Kylee Hash (catcher) and Flynn (shortstop).

The Broncos were hardly threatened at all, even without some of their core stars for this season, including Selwyn Langaigne and Luis Ugueto, both of whom are certain to be key factors in the lineup.

Langaigne and Ugueto are having visa issues but are expected to join the team soon.

BRONCO BITS: Shortly before Friday's game, Pollorena, who was named the District 29-5A Most Valuable Player on Wednesday, confirmed that he will sign to play college ball at the Marion Military Institute in Alabama.

He will join Laredoans Beto Castillo and Alex Salinas, former LBJ standouts, for the Tigers, who play in the Alabama Junior College Conference. ...

The Broncos recently worked out a broadcasting deal with sportsjuice.com.

Ray Brito returns for his second season as the Voice of the Broncos.

The team will broadcast all 80 games this season, starting with the season opener in Edinburg on June 11. ...
======================================

On Saturday, the Broncos came from behind for the win.

Here's Broncos media guru's Ray Brito's game story from the team's second win:

=========================================
The Laredo Broncos fell behind early but came back to beat the Laredo Adult Baseball League by a score of 7-3.

The game was scoreless after 3 innings of play. Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez had no problem getting through his 2 1/3 innings of work. Maximo De La Cruz then came in for the Broncos and got the last 2 outs of the 3rd. Then in the 4th the Laredo Adult Baseball League got to De La Cruz on a RBI single by Alejandro Garza to give them a 1-0 lead.

That would remain the score till the bottom of the 5th inning when the Broncos bats finally got going. David Cardona led off the inning with a single and went to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt. Ryan Flynn and Steven Wright followed with walks to load the bases. OJ Garza then reached on a fielder’s choice with Cardona scoring, Flynn moving to 3rd and Wright out at 2nd. Mario Mendez then followed with a walk to reload the bases and Argelis Nunez reached on an infield single scoring Flynn. The very next batter was Andres “El Monkey” Santos and he delivered with a 2 run single, which gave the Broncos a 4-1 lead after 5.

The Laredo Adult Baseball League would get 1 of those run back in the 6th inning off of Broncos reliever Matt Minor. With the bases loaded Anselmo Nino drew a walk which made the score 4-2 in favor of the Broncos.

The Broncos would tack on a run in the bottom of the 7th. OJ Garza led off with a walk and then stole 2nd. Then a wild pitch moved him to 3rd base where he scored on a single by Mario Mendez making the score 5-2.

The Broncos would add on again to their lead in the 8th inning. Trevor Dimick led off the inning with a walk and then scored on a RBI double by Jonathan Carillo. Carillo would move to 3rd when the throw to home got by the catcher. Romy Cardaya then followed with a ground out scoring Carillo and extending the lead to 7-2.

New Broncos closer Tristan Crawford came in and pitched a scoreless 8th but, gave up 1 run in the 9th inning. However Crawford would still pick up the save as the Broncos beat the Laredo Adult Baseball League by a score of 7-3.

==================================

One key player from both wins has been former United great Andres "El Monkey" Santos.

Santos had a homer and sacrifice RBI in Friday's game, and added a two-run single in Saturday's contest.

Mario Mendez and Angelis Nunez are two other sluggers who made a significant impact in the two games. Keep an eye on those two.

The pitching was again solid for the Broncos on Saturday.

After allowing three runs (all in the ninth inning off reliever David Triplett, who is unlikely to make the final roster) on Friday, the Broncos gave up just three more Saturday.

Alejandro Garza had a RBI single and Anselmo Nino drew a bases-loaded walk off reliever Matt Minor.

Closer Tristan Crawford surrendered a run in the ninth.

Defense was a huge concern for Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez entering the exhibition games, and he had to have been relatively content after the games.

The pitching was solid, the defense was sound and there were few mental mistakes. For exhibition games, not bad showings at all.

Melendez will have some tough cuts to make as he has to trim the roster by 6-8 players by 8 a.m. on June 11.

Some cuts will be easier to make than others, but with the amount of depth and talent Melendez has assembled this season, there will be a lot of good, quality players coming off the bench this season.

Undoubtedly, it is a terrific problem to have, even if the contests were against competition of a considerable lower quality.

Into the 6th, 8-0 Broncos

It's 8-0 Broncos heading into the 6th. Andres Santos added a sacrifice RBI in the fourth.

Backups galore are now on the field for both teams. Each Broncos starter went through 3 ABs before being pulled.

Tijerina in, Flynn stars

Tano Tijerina just pitched a 1-2-3 3rd - groundout, flyout, groundout.

Ryan Flynn has looked superb defensively, showing great range, a quick release and a strong arm. He has been involved in four groundouts through 3 innings so far.

The only player to do much for the Prospects has been Luis Pollorena, who has walked twice. Overall, the Prospects have no hits and could not score after loading the bases with no outs in the 1st. They've left 4 on base.

Broncos lead

The Broncos got on the board in a powerful way in the 2nd inning and lead 7-0 heading into the 3rd.

After the Prospects couldn't capitalize after Harris loaded the bases with no outs in the 1st, former United great Andres "El Monkey" Santos drilled a booming shot over the left field wall with one out in the 2nd.

Prospects starting pitcher Luis Chapa then loaded the bases before Miguel Ortiz nailed a long three-run double into the outfield gap.

Not to be outdone, two batters later Mario Mendez added a two-run triple and Angelis Nunez hit a RBI single.

In all, the Broncos hit for the cycle in the inning.

Chapa was relieved in the 2nd, after allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and striking out 1 while walking 2.

Exhibition night

I'm here at Veterans Field for an exhibition game between the Broncos and the Laredo Wood Bat League Prospects, which include a plethora of local prep greats, including Luis Pollorena, Ramon Sandoval, Danny Navarro and Jorge Guarneros.

Ryan Harris, a righty, is starting on the mound for the Broncos.

There are about maybe 50-60 people here right now. Pretty quiet.

In some other news, Pollorena confirmed to me today that he will be playing college baseball at Marion Military Institute in Alabama.

He will join Laredoans and former LBJ standouts Beto Castillo and Alex Salinas.

Broncos to host 2 exhibition games this weekend

On Wednesday, the Broncos announced they will be hosting two exhibition games on Friday and Saturday at Veterans Field.

“This is a great opportunity for the fans of the Laredo Broncos to come out and see the team we have assembled for the 2009 season,” Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez said. “And not only do you get to watch the Broncos, but you get to see them go up against some of the best talent that Laredo has. It should be a very fun weekend.”

On Friday, the Broncos will take on a team of Laredo’s top baseball products from the Laredo Wooden Bat Adult League.

Those prospects include United High standouts Luis Pollorena and Homer Ortiz.

On Satureday, the Broncos will take on a team from the Laredo Adult Baseball League.

The league has been around for 10 years and 98 percent of the league’s talent is local and high school players.

The Broncos are excited to have the opportunity to play against some of the best talent Laredo has to offer.

“We can’t wait to take on both of these squads,” Broncos field manager Ricardo Cuevas said. “Not only does this give the local players a chance to play against the professionals, but it is also a great way for the Broncos to prepare for the 2009 season.”

Both exhibition games will start at 7:30 p.m. at Veterans Field and are sponsored by the City of Laredo Parks & Recreation Department.

Admission will be free and the concession stands will be open.

Game on for Broncos' 4th of July fireworks show

Due to rumors swirling around that they may not be holding their 4th of July fireworks show this year, the Broncos put a stop to the speculation by confirming that they will be holding the show.

On July 4th, the Broncos take on the San Angelo Colts at 7:30 p.m. at Veterans Field.

After the game is completed, there will be a huge fireworks show sponsored by AT&T.

“There is nothing better than watching baseball and fireworks on the 4th of July," Broncos GM Jose Melendez said in a press release. "You are combining two of America’s pasttimes in celebration of America’s birthday. We have had a packed house every year, and this year will be no different.”

Tickets are on sale now.

Fans can buy tickets for the 4th of July fireworks extravaganza by stopping by the Broncos office at 2200 Santa Maria or calling (956) 723-2273.

Broncos' exhibition vs. Laredo Adult Baseball League

Fans will get their first look at the Broncos on Saturday when the Laredo Adult Baseball League’s local talent will have an exhibition game against the Broncos at Veterans Field at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free.

1st day of practice

The Broncos held their first day of preseason practice on Tuesday at Veterans.

It was a busy day for them, as they also signed starting RHP Ryan Harris, who was the ULB Pitcher of the Year in 2006.

In 10 minor league seasons, Harris, 34, is 64-46 with a 4.30 ERA and 783 strikeouts to 373 walks (2.1 strikeouts per walk).

Harris will compete with Gregorio Martinez for the No. 1 starter's spot.

Maximo de la Cruz is expected to be the No. 3 and Tano Tijerina is slated to be the No. 5. The No 4 spot, obviously, is open.

On Tuesday, 20 Broncos were on hand to begin practice.

Broncos GM Jose Melendez said there are some delays with players, including core players Selwyn Langaigne and Luis Ugueto.

Langaigne is expected to arrive Sunday, while Ugueto is having visa issues and is not expected to be in town until June 12.

Left-handed relievers Edgar Soto and Carlos Alvarez are also having visa issues and are not expected until June 15, the team’s home opener against San Angelo.

“We’re not expecting any serious problems at all,” Melendez said. “They’ll all get approved (to come); it’s just taking a little longer than expected.”

Melendez is fairly confident about his team's pitching this year.

The bullpen boasts depth and power arms and he is expecting strong competition for spots.

One of Melendez's priorities during preseason camp is to search hard for locals with talent.

I'll be at practice on Wednesday so I'll have a better idea of what's going on, who's been doing what and what team management thinks about invitees.
