Broncos snap five-game skid

AMARILLO — The Laredo Broncos got a timely bloop hit as they beat the Amarillo Dillas by a score of 3-2 at Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa on Monday.

The Broncos tallied the games first run in the third inning when Ryan Flynn walked with one out, then scored on a double by David Cardona.

The Dillas answered in the fourth inning. Keanon Simon singled to start off the inning, then stole second base. Andrew Wong followed with a triple, which scored Simon. Carlos Figueroa knocked in Wong with a sacrifice fly, giving Amarillo the 2-1 lead.

The Broncos tied the game in the sixth inning when Argelis Nuñez hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season.

The Broncos then took the lead in the eighth inning as Mario Mendez singled, then Nuñez hit a towering fly ball that landed just fair to allow Mendez to score all the way from first.

Broncos’ starter Gregorio Martinez had one of his best outings of the year, going seven strong innings and giving up two runs on six hits while striking out five. Carlos Alvarez came in to pitch the eighth.

Jason Herman came out to pitch the ninth inning and looking for the save. The Dillas put runners on first and second with one out, but Herman got out of the jam. The Broncos picked up the victory by a score of 3-2.

The Broncos scored three runs on six hits and had no errors, while the Dillas scored two runs on seven hits and had no errors.

The Broncos are now 10-22 on the season, while the Dillas are 17-15.

The Broncos will next be in action tonight as they open up a four- game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings at 7:30 p.m. at Veterans Field.
