Broncos win third straight

SAN ANGELO — The Laredo Broncos had a five-run eighth inning as they beat the San Angelo Colts 5-3 at Foster Field on Wednesday.
The Colts (36-18) scored first in the second inning. Travis Calloway hit an RBI single that scored Nick Mahin. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third, Charley Belew hit a two-run single that scored Calloway and Butch Ballez. That gave San Angelo the early 3-0 lead.
The Broncos (21-33) threatened to get on the scoreboard in fifth as Jaime Morales and Luis Ugueto hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. But David Cardona hit into a 5-4-3 double play, then Mario Mendez struck out to leave the score 3-0 in the Colts’ favor.
Laredo once again had a chance to get on the board in the eighth with Brett Lester in for the Colts as the third reliever the game for San Angelo.
O.J. Garza led off with a single and moved to second on a walk to Jaime Morales. Ugueto followed with a single to load the bases. Cardona hit a sacrifice fly to score Garza. Mendez followed with a walk to once again load the bases.
Jameson Maj came into the game for the Colts to try to get out of the jam. Argelis Nuñez came up and hit a two-run single that scored Morales and Ugueto to tie the game. Mendez advanced to third on the play, then scored on an infield single by Luany Sanchez to give the Broncos their first lead of the game.
After the second out, Moron hit an RBI single that scored Nuñez from second base to make it 5-3.
Laredo starter Will Palmer left the game in line for the win after seven innings of work. He gave up three runs, two of which were earned, on 10 hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Fernando Rijo came into the game to pitch the eighth and gave the Broncos a scoreless inning to keep their lead heading into the ninth.
Franklyn Gracesqui came into the game looking to close out the ballgame and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to give Laredo its third straight victory.
The Broncos scored five runs on 12 hits and had one error, while the Colts scored three runs on 11 hits and had one error.
The teams will play Game 3 of their four-game series tonight at 7:05 p.m.
