Broncos fall to Thunder

ROBSTOWN — The Laredo Broncos’ offense only managed four hits as they lost to the Coastal Bend Thunder by a score of 7-3 at Fairgrounds Field on Wednesday.

The Thunder (35-39) started the scoring in the first, pouring in three runs, but the Broncos (22-53) struck back in the second.

With one out, David Cardona singled then went to third when the right fielder dropped Mario Mendez’s fly ball. Andres Santos then hit an RBI groundout to scored Cardona and make the score 3-1.

Coastal Bend got that run back in the third, but Laredo scored again in the fourth.
Alejandro Martinez led off the inning with a double to left field, then Cardona reached on a throwing error by Amadeo Zazueta, allowing Martinez to score from second and make the score 4-2.

The Broncos made the game closer in the fifth. With two outs, Luis Ugueto was hit by a pitch, then Jaime Morales hit an RBI triple to score Ugueto and cut the Thunder’s lead to 4-3.

Coastal Bend chased Laredo starter Gustavo Vasquez from the game in its half of the fifth, taking a 7-3 lead before Julio Pinto took the mound for the Broncos.

Pinto ended up throwing two a third scoreless innings before being taken out for Franklyn Gracesqui, who pitched a scoreless eighth to keep Laredo trailing by three heading into the ninth.

Alex Gett came out for his second inning of relief and pitched a scoreless ninth to hand the Broncos their fifth straight loss.

The teams will close out their four-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
