BRONCOS WINNING STREAK SNAPPED AT 5 IN LOSS TO AMARILLO
AMARILLO -- The Laredo Broncos slugged 10 runs but it wasn't enough as the Amarillo Dillas pulled out a 14-10 win on Sunday.
The Broncos fell to 27-25 as Amarillo improved to 31-21. Game 2 of the three-game series is tonight at 7:05 p.m.
The Dillas would strike first in the bottom of the first inning on A,J. Johnson's two-run single. Laredo cut its deficit by one on Ben Tinius' RBI single in the second inning with one out.
Amarillo extended its lead to 4-1 on Josh Ashton's RBI single and Gary Schneidmiller's sacrifice RBI in the bottom of the inning before the Broncos took the lead, 7-4, in the third, scoring six runs on four hits, highlighted by Tinius' three-run bomb with one out.
The Dillas would counter in their half of the inning, tying the game on Ashton's two-run single and Stephen Douglas' RBI groundout.
The Broncos regained the lead in the fourth on Steven Wright's solo homer with one out. Dwayne White's RBI single gave Laredo a 9-7 lead before Luany Sanchez added support with his 14th homer of the season, a solo shot to lead off the fifth.
But that would be all she wrote for the Broncos.
Trailing 10-7, Amarillo tied the game in the sixth on Keith Brachold's RBI double and Schneidmiller's RBI single.
The Dillas struck again in the seventh, taking a 13-10 lead as Brachold and Ashton drilled RBI singles and Schneidmiller hit a sacrifice RBI.
Justin Wenger's RBI double in the eighth closed the scoring for Amarillo.
Broncos starter Richard Bartlett went five-plus innings, surrendering 10 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits. He struck out four and walked four. Nathan Crawford (0-1) took the loss.
Marcos Castillo (6-2) got the win for the Dillas.
The Broncos scored 10 runs on 14 hits and committed one error while the Dillas scored 14 runs on 16 hits and committed one error.
