Pre-game for Broncos vs. Colts, Game 2

It's a  blistering hot day here at Veterans.

First pitch is less than 30 minutes away and we already have a drastic change.

Righty Mickey Callaway, former TAMIU baseball coach and five-year major league veteran, was scratched as a starter.

According to Broncos GM Jose Melendez, ace Santo Hernandez went up to Manager Dan Shwam following last night's 6-4 loss and "demanded" to get the ball.

Melendez said that Shwam reported that Hernandez said he was "sick of the losing" and, as a result, Callaway was scratched from his slated Game 2 start and Hernandez was given the role.

Melendez was impressed by Hernandez's actions.

"I liked it," he said. "It shows initiative and that's the type of leadership this team has lacked. He's tired of losing and he wants to do something about it."

I agree with Melendez. It does show great pride, particularly from Hernandez, who clearly has the prestige to be a team leader, but that conflicts with his quiet and introverted nature.

As for Callaway, I never believed he was ready. He's pitched one inning since his return from Tommy John surgery, striking out one and walking two in that frame.

I'm told he will be a reliever and is ready to throw 3 innings. But if he was to start, that wouldn't cut it.

Gregorio Martinez (4-2, 5.50 ERA) will start the first game. He's surrendered 15 earned runs in his last four starts, going 0-2 with two no-decisions.

His opponent will be Billy McKinney (2-4, 7.16).

Broncos' lineup for Game 1 is as follows:

LF   Anthony Bennett
SS   Arnoldo Ponce
1B   Luany Sanchez
RF   Edgard Clemente
DH  Dwayne White
2B   Ivan Reyes
3B   Ben Tinius
CF   Steven Wright
C     Josue Gonzalez
