The Broncos are coming off a dynamic 15-13 July 4 win last night. Here is LMT reporter Joy Lindsay's take on the game.
But last night was last night, and the Broncos are looking forward to today's double set, each consisting of seven innings.
The Broncos enter today's action with a 25-24 record. They sit in fourth place, four games ahead of fifth place Edinburg and 2 1/2 games behind third place Alexandria.
Laredo is on a three-game winning streak while Harlingen has taken the opposite road, losing three in a row.
Starters for Game 1 of the doubleheader:
For Laredo, right-handed ace Santo Hernandez (5-3, 2.87 ERA) will be taking the mound. His opponent will be Todd Lutz (2-2, 5.23).
Hernandez leads ULB in ERA and strikeouts (74 in 63 innings pitched).
The WhiteWings enter tonight's contest last in the league in hitting (.274) and next-to-last in pitching (5.89 ERA).
The Broncos are third in hitting (.303) and lead the league in home runs (58). They are fourth in pitching (5.78).
The lineup for Game 1 for Laredo:
CF Steven Wright
SS Arnoldo Ponce
RF Dwayne White
DH Edgard Clemente
C Luany Sanchez
3B Ben Tinius
1B Ivan Reyes
2B Eric Padilla
LF Anthony Bennett
Transactions have been quiet for Laredo the last three days. The Broncos are still looking to add another power hitter but are becoming more and more confident in the fact that Johnny Lopez can assume that role once he returns off the inactive list sometime after the All-Star break.
Clemente is still nowhere near 100 percent health and Broncos GM Jose Melendez noted it almost nearly impossible for him to run.
Both Melendez and Shwam, however, know that Clemente is too much of a presence to disregard. Once Lopez or another power-hitter is activated, it can be assumed Clemente's playing time will drop considerably. Until then, with the team in the race for its second playoff berth in three seasons, the Broncos need him in the lineup.
