Hometown slugger wins All-Star game HR derby

SAN ANGELO, Texas - When watching a Major League Baseball Home Run Derby, fans often see monstrous sluggers humbled by their young sons who bring them a drink or a towel to help them hit more long balls. The scenario was no different for the United League-Golden League All-Star Home Run Derby at Foster Field in San Angelo. San Angelo Colts first baseman Andres Rodriguez, hitting in front of his hometown fans, received a little help from his two-year old son Justin in the form of a kiss on the cheek and went on to win the competition with 10 homers in the final round.

Rodriguez can spend even more time with his family when the season is over, as he not only won a commemorative D-Bat trophy, but earned an all-expense-paid Royal Caribbean cruise for eight days and seven nights.

The Derby featured six participants from the Golden League (Patrick Breen, Ryan Stevenson, Drew Miller, Norm Hutchins, Joe Jiannetti, Mark Okano) and six from the United League (Rodriguez, Jose Torres, Palmer Karr, Bryan Sabatella, Danny Bravo, Luany Sanchez).

Justin visited Rodriguez, 6-foot-5 and 250lbs., in the middle of the first round, which Rodriguez completed with five homers. Each hitter had six outs in the first round, with the top two players from each league advancing into the final round. However. while Sabatella put on a show and led the way with 12 in the opening round, Rodriguez and Karr were tied with five so all three moved into the finals for ULB.

Stevenson and Okano hit two each to lead the way for the Golden League and move into the finals as the other four GBL sluggers hit no home runs. Hitters were given eight outs in the final round and Rodriguez hit 10, three more than Karr to win it. Sabatella and Okano hit five each in the finals while Stevenson hit two again.
