Pre-game for Broncos vs. Alexandria

There's a sense of anxiety here at Veterans Field as the Broncos look forward to the final 31 games of the season.

The Broncos are four games out of third place, and four games out of fifth, but they seem confident and relaxed.

What concerns me is they have their sights set on Edinburg (in fifth place) instead of Amarillo (in third place).

Instead of looking at the teams behind them, they should be looking ahead. They seem content with getting the fourth, and final, playoff spot when third place is easily within their reach.

Anyway...

The debut of pitcher Mickey Callaway is on hold. The team has yet to receive the results from his physical, which they are expecting to get tomorrow.

They are also waiting on the same thing for infielder Johnny Lopez, who has missed the majority of the season with a right wrist injury.

If the Broncos have their way, both of them will be activated tomorrow, giving them a stud pitcher and a solid hitter who can bring in runs.

Also, General Manager Jose Melendez told me that the contracts of ace right-hander Santo Hernandez and catcher Luany Sanchez are expected to be bought out by affiliated teams in the near future.

Hernandez leads the league in ERA and strikeouts while Sanchez, the MVP of Tuesday's All-Star game, leads the league in home runs and RBIs.

So you can imagine the toll their losses will take, though Broncos officials are gleaming with pride over the possibility of their players moving up.

On to tonight's game:

Alexandria enters tonight's game with a 36-23 record, good for second place in ULB. It is 9-1 in its last 10 games and has won four straight.

Lineup for the Broncos:

CF   Steven Wright
SS   Arnoldo Ponce
C    Luany Sanchez
DH Edgard Clemente
LF  Dwayne White
3B  Ben Tinius
1B   Ivan Reyes
2B   Eric Padilla
RF   Anthony Bennett

On the mound for Laredo is lefty Sean Donlin (2-2, 3.22 ERA). His opponent is Alejandro Martinez (3-1, 6.14 ERA).
