A pitchers’ duel set the tone in a tightly-contested Game 1 of the doubleheader before Ben Tinius’ walk-off solo blast to left center field with one out in the seventh inning handed the Broncos their fourth consecutive win, 2-1.
Broncos right-hander Santo Hernandez and WhiteWings righty Todd Lutz each pitched spectacularly, combining for 4 ½ scoreless innings to start the game.
But with the game tied 1-1 heading into the seventh, Tinius allowed Hernandez the win by taking a pitch with a 1-1 count deep to left center.
It was his second home run of the season.
Lutz retired the first 10 batters he faced and allowed just one hit through 4 2/3 innings before surrendering Anthony Bennett’s RBI single with two outs in the fifth.
Hernandez, though, who had faced the minimum over the first four innings, obliged by allowing Joel Gonzalez’s solo home run – his first of his career – to lead off the sixth, setting up Tinius’ eventual heroics.
Hernandez improved to 6-3, throwing a complete game and allowing one run on four hits while striking out 10 and walking one.
Lutz fell to 2-3. He, too, pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking none.
