Broncos ready for pivotal series

I'm here at Veterans Field as the Broncos (17-15) are ready to engage in a pivotal three-game series against the San Angelo Colts (18-15).

The Broncos sit a half-game behind the Colts for second place in United League Baseball. Both teams enter tonight's opener on respective two-game winning streaks.

The Broncos are four games out of first place while the Colts are 3 1/2 games out.

Earlier today, the Broncos put 18-year-old infielder Ben Day on the inactive list. They also signed left-hander Rhett Barber, who played under Dan Shwam last year for the Can-Am Grays.

They're expected to sign another pitcher tomorrow afternoon. That pitcher will start Wednesday's game.

But first things first, and that's tonight, where right-handed ace Santo Hernandez will be pitching on two days' rest after throwing just 20 pitches in his start on Saturday before being ejected in the second inning.

He's 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA this season. His opponent will be left-hander Logan Williamson (3-2, 7.36).
